I was born in North Philadelphia in 1956. I'm living in Olney since 1958. I've seen lots of Philadelphia in my time, and over the last ten to fifteen years I've seen a lot of Philadelphia disappear.

Apparently, when Marcel suddenly embraces her at a huge party studded with stars and personalities to celebrate her birthday, Peggy Guggenheim is jealously torn between remaining in the company of Marcel or joining Howard Putzel and Jean van Doren in the studio upstairs, where Max Ernst is selling a painting to Gypsy Rose Lee. When she discovers that Max has given Gypsy another painting as a wedding present, Peggy is furious.

After Chicago, Duchamp makes another stop on his return east at the Cleveland Museum of Art in order to make colour notes for the reproduction of his Nu descendant un Escalier [18.3.1912], which is on loan from the Arensbergs in the museum's "Twentieth Anniversary Exhibition". Finding the entire staff "horribly sombre, embarrassed and reserved", Duchamp wonders whether he has done something wrong until the director, William M. Milliken, confesses that through some dreadful error, the exhibition catalogue records Duchamp as having been dead for three years: (1887-1933).
