Ah, to remember all those pit-stop meals at The Girls--route 9 where route 50 comes in, right there in the center of the triangle. There was definitely something Josie and the Pussycats about the place. Summer of '73 and follows. Back then it was Folsom where you were most likely to get a speeding ticket.

The Incredulity of Saint Thomas is interesting however. Caravaggio depicts an event that the Bible doesn't actually say happened. You could say that Caravaggio is playing with history a bit. But was Thomas really doubting Christ, or did he just feel left out? Maybe John too played a bit with 'history' by using Thomas' supposed expressed doubt as an object lesson in blind faith. In all fairness, John is the only Apostle on record (written by John himself) to have believed in the resurrected Christ before seeing the resurrected Christ. (Read John, chapter 20 carefully.) The resurrected Christ first appeared to Mary Magdalene and she didn't know it was Him. All the other Apostles (except Thomas) got to see the resurrected Christ Easter night, and He made an explicit show of His hands and side. So it really isn't all that wrong for Thomas to say, "I want Him to show me his hands and side too." He deserved that treat as much as the rest of them.

August 22, 1977. Monday, Siena
Went to Siena for a day trip.
I'm not sure what I think about Siena.
The Campo was a great space, especially in section. The town seemed lonely and too rural. I like big cities. I'm sure the people that live there feel a strong belonging. I don't think I could ever live or belong there.
The cathedral was amazing. Almost everything was striped horizontally--green and white. Everyone else hated it. I thought it was great just because it was done. It's wonderful to see something done horribly. One can get sick of things that are too perfect, because nothing is perfect. It's a reality because it is there, and what a teacher. A nice part was the unfinished nave. It was a lone fragment against the sky. I would have loved it last semester (Charles Moore and all that crap).
I wish I had a chance to do a design problem, my feelings and intentions in architecture have changed a great deal. I'm now beginning to realize what happened in second year.

1941. Friday, Lyons
In the morning Totor does some more shopping with Roché, who admires his way of preparing things. They have a nice lunch at the end of the Pont de la Guillotière, with chocolate for Totor, and then play two games of chess at the Café Neuf: Roché loses but learns. After a good talk, Totor leaves for Grenoble and Roché returns to Saint-Martin-en-Haut.
