Ever since the research by Jennifer Cough-Cooper and Jacques Caumont we know that Marcel Duchamp took photos of the Forestay in 1946. However, nobody has answered the question why the artist chose just this waterfall and not any other. One would have to assume that only few Duchamp scholars have ever visited this unique location on Lake Geneva, and so most of them are bound to be unaware of the fact that the then Bellevue Hotel offers a direct view onto the township of La Tour-de-Peilz where Gustave Courbet spent the last years of his life. And Gustave Courbet created the famous painting L’Origine du monde which was the immediate source of inspiration for Duchamp’s Étant donnés installation.

Wouldn't it be fun if Monday, 5 August 1912, was one of the days that Marcel Duchamp visited the Glyptothek in Munich? "Complete liberation" indeed!
I don't know what the policy was in 1912, but in 1902 admittance to the Glyptothek on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays was free.

1946. Monday, Chexbres
After several days enjoying the warm hospitality of the Hoppenots at the French embassy in Bern [30.7.1946], Mary Reynolds and Marcel are staying at the Bellevue, a small hotel built on the ledge, recommended to them by Hélène Hoppenot, who stayed there as a child. Dominating the steep vineyards of Lavaux, the hotel has a stupendous view across Lake Geneva to the mountains of Savoy.
Within a stone's throw is the deep ravine of the Forestay, the mountain stream dividing Puidoux from Chexbres. There, where its racing waters drive the millwheels belonging to the cluster of rural industries clinging to the rocky slope, as it plunges with a roar on its precipitous course to the lake below, is the waterfall which Marcel wants to photograph, finding it perfect for the décor of the new piece burgeoning in his mind.
During the day, Mary and Marcel explore Vevey and are captivated by the romantic lake-side market town with its memories of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Lord Byron, Gustave Courbet, Hodler and Vallotton. For the Hoppenots, they ask an estate agent, M. Flouck, about houses for sale in the area.
