Motivators/Block-busters
Took apart Museumpeace this morning. The glue had been drying for a few years now and there was very little structure to it left. Surprised to find that two screws were used in addition to glue.
Feels like I dismantled a blockage.
The individual pieces are all interesting, so a new sculpture will be in the works. Maybe call it Quondam Museumpeace.

An article published by Vogue entitled "The new New York Art Scene", draws on material from Alan Solomon's forthcoming book. The author believes that the sources of the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Jim Dine and Claes Oldenburg "were in part based on the general modern current of Dada, Surrealism and Constructivism... but most of all, probably, on the art of Marcel Duchamp, which they knew... mostly in a vague way from the illustrations in books... Only later did they discover Duchamp almost by surprise as a person living in New York among them." Solomon considers that more than a historical source, it is Duchamp's attitude which is so much in tune with the younger generation: "He does not behave like a master but instead brings a wry sense of humour to bear on himself and his surroundings."
Accompanying the article (but not included in the book) is the image of Duchamp standing before the CBS building, taken in 1965 by Ugo Mulas, the Milanese photographer. The book is to be illustrated with photographs by Mulas (taken during the same period) of Duchamp at his apartment, 14 West 10th Street, and at the Museum of Modern Art.

Following Robert Lebel's news that the photograph of the Moulin à Café requested from Maria Martins [4.6.1957] in Brazil is "mediocre", Marcel writes asking Maria if she would send the canvas to Paris via the diplomatic bag. Also for Lebel's book, Marcel has just finished translating
The Creative Act [5.4.1957] into French.

In the Art Digest, Judith K. Reed reviews an exhibition at the Chinese Gallery, 38 East 57th Street, in which a portrait of Duchamp by Reuben Nakian is shown. Duchamp sat for the portrait in 1943. The sculptor, who has made many portrait heads of his friends and other artists, may have met Duchamp through Gaston Lachaise.
