Preoccupied by the aftermath of the political events in May, Duchamp writes to his old friend Dumouchel: "One must hope that the increase in salaries and all the reforms will have a positive effect upon the other obstacles, inflation, unemployment, price increases, etc. Otherwise in October it will start again. I am too old," he continues, "to meddle, even to have an opinion about all this nonsense."

Most of the day Marcel watches the masons building the fireplace, which was started on Saturday. Fascinated by their speed and efficiency, every few minutes Teeny hears Marcel crying "Bravo!"

1913. Wednesday, Neuilly-sur-Seine
In the wake of the famous Armory Show [17.2.1913] which closed in Boston on 19 May, Duchamp writes belatedly to Walter Pach in New York about the sale of his four paintings: "I am very happy and thank you for the dedication with which you have defended our painting."
Mr Torrey [1.3.1913], proud possessor of Nu descendant un Escalier [18.3.1912] has been in Paris: "A very kind man," Duchamp remarks to Pach, "he appeared to be very pleased to meet us." When he presented Torrey with Encore à cet Astre [18.3.1912], the sketch which preluded the Nude, the American asked for confirmation that the work of the group at Puteaux was derived from Cezanne. "I am sure most of my friends would say so," answered Duchamp, "and I know that he is a great man. Nevertheless, if I am to tell what my own point of departure has been, I should say that it was the art of Odilon Redon."
Is Pach working a lot? "I am terribly upset at the moment and I'm not doing anything at all," Duchamp admits. "These are short unpleasant moments." In August, however, he plans to spend some time in England.
