Know your Exit
I knew virtually nothing about Joseph Cornell until I read Joseph Cornell/Marcel Duchamp...in resonance in Spring 2001. (I was/am very familiar with Duchamp, however, because of years of many visits to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.) I found that Cornell and I had/have virtually identical kitchen sinks, and that Cornell's 'studio' looks very much like my basement. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Flushing vis-à-vis New York City is very similar to Olney vis-à-vis Philadelphia.

Their house is a museum, when people come to see 'em
It only occurred to me recently that a couple of simple lyrics from the theme song of The Addams Family television show (1964-66) may well have subliminally inspired an aspiration I've subsequently held on to the rest of my life. I was eight years old when The Addams Family first aired, and it right away became one of my favorite shows. Aside from the kooky fun of it all--"Tish, you spoke French!"--it was the house that I loved most. It was, no doubt, my first (albeit unwitting) introduction to a cabinet of curiosities, the Wunderkammer.

The real and/or virtual house as museum. Fascinating!

Re: Contemporary Art as sex
The title of Duchamp's and Jennewein's co-authored paper for the Horace Trumbauer Architecture Fan Club Convention is "Nudist Camp at the Philadelphia Museum of Art."

Tante Acht und Achtzig and "Nudist Camp..."
"His [i.e., Ludwig's and Otto's father] other sister, Princess Alexandra, suffered throughout her life from the believe that she had once swallowed an entire grand piano made of glass. She spent many years locked away in a convent." After dying at Nymphenburg she later opted for reincarnation, and even played her later self in a movie.

Arcadia is an actual region of Greece, a series of valleys surrounded by high mountains and therefore difficult of access. In very ancient times, the people of Arcadia were known to be rather primitive herdsmen of sheep, goats and bovines, rustic folk who led an unsophisticated yet happy life in the natural fertility of their valleys and foothills. Soon, however, their down-to-earth culture came to be closely associated with their traditional singing and pipe playing, an activity they used to pass the time as they herded their animals. Their native god was Pan, the inventor of the Pan pipes (seven reeds of unequal length held together by wax and string). The simple, readily accessible and moving music Pan and the Arcadian shepherds originated soon gained a wide appreciation all over the Greek world.

Literary nonfiction, frequently called literary journalism or creative nonfiction, is an ancient form. The use of words to convey true meaning is surely at the very base of language development. But however long its history, it is an art particularly suited to the complexity and confusion of life as we live it.

But beneath the hype and fraud, we believe a real revolution is taking place--a revolution that in the coming century will endow factual writing with artistic legitimacy and power. This will evolve from the growing ability of nonfiction writers to produce work that is both factual and true to the complex realities of the contemporary world, that derives its meaning directly from life, and is so emotionally compelling as to rival fiction in audience appeal.

The first time Harry came by after his return, the woman in charge wouldn't allow him to see me, said it wasn't my day for visitors. This place is almost as bad as being in jail!

A retired couple on Hilton Head Island. The wife has an affair with the tennis pro -- that will be my next short story. Those poor people over there are so bored, golf and liquor is all they have. I've always said that if they used only the empty gin bottles for a land fill it would stretch all the way to Charleston. They could extend the golf course.
