single all-time favourite motion picture scene
I like all the scenes of symmetry in The Ruling Class--the best movie utilizing schizophrenia ever?
Liz Taylor on the phone with shampoo in her hair in Butterfield 8.
(sounding like she just took a crap and then realized there's no toilet paper) Liz Taylor (from off-screen) in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? yelling, "Hey! Heeeey! Where the hell is everybody?"
Liz Taylor putting on eye makeup in The Driver's Seat--definitely the Ur-Linda Richards as portrayed years later by Mike Myers.
Liz Taylor playing an actress reenacting a quondam part she played, this time used as an alibi in response to the detective investigating her husband's murder in The Mirror Cracked, followed by the shock when the detective names the movie within which the just reenacted scene first occurred.

1936. Saturday, West Redding
Miss Dreier gives Duchamp a cheque for $43.50 to reimburse him for a bill he has paid from the Danbury Glass Company for polished plate glass and 50 cents of expenses related to repairing the Large Glass.

After his meetings with Duchamp at The Haven and in New York [3.6.1936], Frank Merchant's article "Restoring 1,000 glass bits in panels" is published in the Literary Digest. The author points out the irony of Duchamp, an iconoclast, busy "recreating" one of his works: the Large Glass [5.2.1923]. While watching him at his task, Merchant learned that, for Duchamp, the shattered glass was "a catalogue of ideas" instead of "a mere picturization". Duchamp also explained: "For me, painting is out of date. It is a waste of energy, not good engineering, not practical. We have photography, the cinema, so many other ways of representing life now... Of course, there will always be painters. But for me, there is no religion for life in it any more." It is ironical too, considers Merchant, that both Duchamp's most important works, the Large Glass and Nu descendant un Escalier [18.3.1912J, "are in this country, though at opposite ends": the former in a porticoed Connecticut house, the latter at Walter Arensberg's, in Hollywood.

1919. Friday, Buenos Aires
Now that he has finished packing, Marcel continues a letter to the Arensbergs commenced four days ago. Reviewing the nine months spent in Argentina [19.9.1918J, Marcel considers that he has worked very well, even if he hasn't had much fun. "I feel I am quite ready," he explains, "to become a chess maniac. Everything around me takes the shape of the Knight or the Queen, and the exterior world has no other interest for me other than in its transformation to winning or losing positions..."
